RC Lens stunned European champions Paris Saint-Germain with a 1-0 victory on Sunday night to win the French Super Cup, giving Saudi Arabia international defender Saud Abdulhamid his second major trophy with the club.
Florian Thauvin scored the decisive goal in the 32nd minute, putting Lens ahead against a PSG side that had dominated French football and recently won the Champions League for the second time.
Lens were reduced to 10 men just seven minutes after taking the lead when Kylian Antonio was shown a red card. Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for much of the match, Lens defended resolutely and prevented PSG from finding an equaliser.
PSG were also reduced to 10 players late in the game when Nuno Mendes was sent off in the closing minutes. Lens held on through the final stages to secure one of the biggest victories in the club’s recent history.
The triumph gave Abdulhamid his second trophy with Lens after the team won the Coupe de France last season. The Saudi defender initially joined the French club on loan from Italian Serie A side Roma in the summer of 2025.
Following a successful first campaign, Lens made his move permanent the following summer.
Abdulhamid made his Lens debut on August 16, 2025, against Olympique Lyonnais. His arrival marked an important moment for Saudi football, as he became the first Saudi player to appear, score and win a major trophy in French football.
His first goal for Lens came in March when he scored during a 3-0 victory over Metz. The goal added another milestone to his growing career in European football.
The Super Cup victory further strengthens Abdulhamid’s position as one of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent players competing abroad. His move to France followed his development in the Saudi Pro League and subsequent transfer to Roma, before he continued his career in Ligue 1 with Lens.
For Lens, the victory provided an early statement against a PSG team that entered the match as both French champions and reigning European champions. PSG’s recent success had established the club as a dominant force in Europe, making Lens’ win particularly notable.
Thauvin’s first-half goal ultimately proved enough, with Lens surviving the dismissal of Antonio and a sustained second-half challenge from PSG.
The result gives Lens another trophy and adds to Abdulhamid’s collection in France, while also providing the club with confidence heading into the new campaign.
