Barcelona Close In on La Liga Title as Atletico Build Momentum Ahead of Arsenal Clash

Barcelona moved to the verge of retaining the La Liga title with a 2-0 victory over Getafe on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid boosted morale ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal with a dramatic 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Goals from Fermin Lopez and Marcus Rashford secured all three points for Barcelona, extending their lead at the top of the table to 11 points over second-placed Real Madrid. Madrid’s hopes of mounting a late challenge suffered a setback on Friday when they were held to a draw by Real Betis.

Hansi Flick’s side could clinch a second straight Spanish league crown next weekend if they beat Osasuna and Real Madrid fail to overcome Espanyol.

Despite missing injured wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, Barcelona found enough quality to overcome a resilient Getafe side. The hosts disrupted Barca’s rhythm with a physical approach, limiting clear-cut chances for much of the first half.

The breakthrough came just before the interval when Pedri threaded a precise pass through to Lopez, who calmly finished. The midfielder marked the goal with Yamal’s trademark “304” celebration in tribute to the injured teenager.

Getafe were forced to open up after the break, and Barcelona took advantage. After Robert Lewandowski released Rashford with a well-timed pass, the England forward raced clear and slotted past goalkeeper David Soria to seal the win. It was another important contribution from the Manchester United loanee as Barcelona tightened their grip on the title race.

While Barcelona edge closer to domestic glory, Atletico Madrid turned their focus toward Europe after ending a difficult run with an important victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Alexander Sorloth scored twice as Diego Simeone’s side came from behind to claim a much-needed win at the Metropolitano. Athletic took the lead midway through the first half through Aitor Paredes’ powerful header.

Antoine Griezmann levelled shortly after the restart, poking home from close range, before Sorloth completed the turnaround five minutes later following excellent work from Alex Baena.

There was concern for Atletico, however, when midfielder Pablo Barrios was forced off with an apparent injury in the second half. The young Spaniard, recently returned from a thigh problem, walked off visibly frustrated, casting doubt over his availability for Wednesday’s first-leg clash against Arsenal.

Sorloth added a second in stoppage time to give Atletico breathing space, although Gorka Guruzeta pulled one back late for the visitors.

The victory ended a poor spell in which Atletico had lost seven of their previous eight matches. With their domestic position secure, Simeone’s side can now focus fully on their bid for a first Champions League title.

Players and supporters celebrated together after the final whistle, with attention already turning to the season-defining encounter against Arsenal.
