Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the current season, bringing an end to a successful nine-year spell at Anfield when his contract expires.
The Scotland captain, who joined Liverpool in 2017, has been a key figure in one of the club’s most successful eras in recent history. During his time on Merseyside, Robertson helped the team secure two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League trophy and the FA Cup, along with several other honours.
In a statement released on Thursday, Liverpool described the 32-year-old defender as “a genuine Liverpool legend” and confirmed he had made 373 appearances for the club. Known for his consistency, leadership and attacking contributions from left back, Robertson has been widely regarded as one of the most influential players in his position during his time in England.
Reflecting on his departure, Robertson said leaving Liverpool would be an emotional decision for both him and his family. He noted that the club had played a central role in his life over nearly a decade.
“It’s never easy leaving a club like Liverpool, it has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last nine years,” he said.
Robertson also revealed that he had received opportunities to move on over the past year but chose to remain at Anfield due to the strong connection he felt with the club. However, he indicated that the time had come to take the next step in his career.
“I know football moves on, I know teams move on and I think now is the time for me to move on and go wherever my next move is and wherever my career takes me,” he added.
His departure marks another significant change for Liverpool, coming shortly after the club confirmed that Mohamed Salah will also leave at the end of the season. The Egyptian forward has been another cornerstone of Liverpool’s recent success, and his exit alongside Robertson signals the close of a notable chapter for the team.
Robertson’s time at Liverpool has been defined by his work rate, defensive reliability and ability to contribute in attack, often providing key assists. His partnership on the left flank became a defining feature of the club’s playing style during its most successful campaigns.
As Liverpool prepare for a period of transition, Robertson’s departure will leave a significant gap in both experience and leadership. Attention will now turn to how the club reshapes its squad ahead of the next season, while the defender begins the search for the next stage of his career.
