The third round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship is set to begin in Fujairah on Saturday, as athletes and clubs compete for crucial points in the season standings. The No-Gi format of this stage is expected to bring a faster pace and heightened competition.
Organised by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, the championship continues to attract growing participation, reflecting increasing interest in the sport across the country. Officials say the event plays a key role in developing talent and providing athletes with opportunities to compete at a high level.
Abdullah Salem Al-Zaabi, director of marketing and corporate communication at the federation, said participation levels have been steadily rising throughout the season. He noted that the expansion of the sport has contributed to stronger competition and has created an environment where athletes can refine their skills in a structured and professional setting.
The No-Gi format, which differs from traditional gi competitions by removing the use of the uniform for grips, demands greater speed, agility and tactical awareness. Competitors must rely more on technique and quick decision-making, making matches more dynamic and unpredictable.
Among those preparing for the event is Theyab Alnuaimi of Al-Ain Club, who highlighted the challenges of this format. He said the faster pace requires constant focus, as even minor errors can quickly change the outcome of a match. At the same time, he described the championship as an important opportunity to face a variety of opponents and gain valuable experience.
The competition forms part of a broader calendar aimed at strengthening the UAE’s position as a global hub for jiu-jitsu. Over recent years, the country has invested heavily in promoting the sport at both grassroots and elite levels, with national tournaments serving as a pathway for emerging athletes.
Clubs will be looking to secure points in this round to improve their positions in the overall rankings, with the season entering a critical phase. Strong performances in Fujairah could prove decisive in shaping the final standings as the championship progresses.
Spectators are expected to witness high-intensity bouts as competitors adapt to the demands of the No-Gi format, showcasing both technical skill and physical endurance. With participation on the rise and competition intensifying, the event is set to be another important milestone in the development of jiu-jitsu in the UAE.
