The Mid East Falcons opened their season with a landmark achievement, as four pitchers delivered nine hitless innings to secure a 2–0 victory over Karachi, marking the first combined no-hitter in Baseball United’s inaugural season. The historic performance came in just the league’s fifth game, placing the Falcons’ accomplishment among one of the rarest feats in professional baseball.
Three Japanese pitchers set the tone for the night. Kazuki Yabuta handled the starting role, working five innings and striking out six. He threw 68 pitches, 45 of them strikes, establishing early control and giving the Falcons a steady foundation. Yudai Mizushina followed with two innings, recording a walk and a strikeout. Mizushina previously won the TBS Plan D competition, a talent search created by Baseball United Chairman and CEO Kash Shaikh in partnership with Japan’s Tokyo Broadcast System.
Shotaro Kasahara added a clean eighth inning with no hits or runs, while Severino Gonzalez closed out the ninth to complete the combined no-hitter. Only 21 such feats have occurred in nearly 150 years of Major League Baseball, highlighting the significance of what the Falcons achieved in their first outing.
Offensively, the Falcons broke the deadlock in the sixth inning. Former NPB and MLB infielder Munenori Kawasaki and teammate Jake Hjelle produced back-to-back doubles to bring in the opening run. The second run came in the eighth after a defensive error during Federico Celli’s at-bat. Both runs were scored by Yo Kanahara, another TBS Plan D winner who appeared as the team’s Designated Runner.
Shaikh praised the moment, calling it a milestone for the young league. “Such an incredible night with the first no-hitter in our league’s short history,” he said. “We knew the Falcons’ pitching staff was loaded, led by several stars from Japan. And they didn’t disappoint.”
While the Falcons celebrated, it was a difficult night for Karachi. Pitcher Mark Simon took the loss despite a solid outing of 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, one earned run, one walk, and recording a strikeout. The defeat marked Karachi’s third straight loss, dropping their record to 1–3 and placing them at the bottom of the standings.
The Falcons will meet the Monarchs again on Friday, Nov. 21, as they look to build on a remarkable season opener. On Thursday night, the Arabia Wolves will try to secure their first win of the campaign when they face table leaders Mumbai Cobras.
