Messi and Yamal Set for Historic World Cup Final Showdown at MetLife Stadium

Football fans around the world will witness a clash of generations on Sunday when Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spain’s teenage star Lamine Yamal meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.

The match brings together one of the greatest players in football history and a rising talent widely regarded as the sport’s next global superstar.

At 39, Messi is set to become the oldest outfield player ever to appear in a World Cup final. Only Italy goalkeeper Dino Zoff, who was 40 when Italy won the 1982 World Cup, has played in a final at an older age.

Yamal, meanwhile, heads into the biggest match of his career just days after celebrating his 19th birthday. The Barcelona winger is aiming to join an exclusive list of players who have lifted the World Cup while still in their teens.

The final also marks the first meeting between Messi and the player who has emerged as Barcelona’s newest academy star, following in the footsteps of the Argentine legend at the Spanish club.

Yamal’s rise has been remarkably rapid. He made his Barcelona first-team debut at just 15, earned his first Spain cap at 16 and helped Spain win the UEFA Euro 2024 title shortly after turning 17. His performances earned him the tournament’s Best Young Player award, while he later finished runner-up to Ousmane Dembele in the Ballon d’Or voting.

Messi praised the young forward ahead of the final, acknowledging both his talent and the challenge he poses.

“He is a global icon at the age of 19 and has the chance to do something historic, although we will be doing everything to stop him,” Messi said.

Yamal admitted there were concerns over his participation in the tournament after suffering an injury toward the end of Barcelona’s season.

“I was afraid it might be serious and, above all, that even if it wasn’t serious, I could suffer a setback and end up missing the World Cup,” he said.

After beginning the tournament cautiously, including a substitute appearance against Cape Verde, Yamal has become a regular starter as Spain reached the final.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has described the teenager as a “genius,” comparing his talent to legendary creative figures such as Salvador Dalí and Michelangelo.

History is also within reach for Yamal. Only Brazil’s Pelé and Italy’s Giuseppe Bergomi played in a World Cup final at a younger age. Pelé and France’s Kylian Mbappé remain the only teenagers to score in a World Cup final.

Adding another layer to Sunday’s occasion is a famous photograph taken nearly two decades ago, showing a 20-year-old Messi bathing a five-month-old Yamal during a UNICEF charity calendar photo shoot.

“That photo is incredible,” Messi said when asked about the image.
