The matchup between Spain and Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final promises to be more than just a clash of football titans; it’s a narrative of coaching and preparation.
The lion’s share of discussion has been on Lionel Messi’s potential final World Cup game, and Spain’s teenage wonder, Lamine Yamal’s fight against the Argentine captain, but another interesting storyline has emerged. During UEFA Pro Licence coaching courses run by the Spanish Football Federation, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has coached Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni before.
Prior to their two transfer to become international football’s most respected managers, Scaloni attended coaching classes where De la Fuente was an instructor. The Spanish coach taught the upcoming managers about different areas of football, team development, the evolution of football and tactics.
During Euro 2024, De la Fuente shared memories of training some of the iconic players who went on to become coaches.
He said he’s had the opportunity to instruct a number of coaching courses. I had the opportunity to teach Lionel Scaloni, and have taught footballers such as Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso and Raul.
The duo have been mutually respectful over the years and De la Fuente even referred to Scaloni as a “colleague and friend”. Prior to the World Cup semi-finals, the Spain coach was hoping the two countries could meet again, which they did in the victory over England.
Spain are in a strong form heading into Sunday’s game. They equaled Italy’s record of 37 unbeaten games in international football in Europe (FIFA) with a 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals. The Iberians have been tight down the back and in command through the tournament and have only given away one goal in the process as they would dispatch Portugal, Belgium and France.
De la Fuente has been an important factor in shaping the current team. Prior to leading the senior squad in 2022, he lead Spain’s under-19 and under-21 teams to European championships, in addition to the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. He has a number of senior players under his tutelage who have included Rodri, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Mikel Merino and Mikel Oyarzabal.
It’s not been such a smooth journey to the final for Argentina. The defending champions had to go to overtime to dispatch Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland before the incredible turnaround in the England semi final.
With the score against them, Argentina got two goals in the dying moments of the game, the first of which was given away to Messi to send Argentina to their second World Cup final.
Scaloni commended his team’s efforts after the win.
I believe this team is at its best when they have to battle,” he said. “We believe that those last few moments really captured everything that we believe in.”
Messi has been surrounded by players such as Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Rodrigo De Paul, Lautaro Martínez and Cristian Romero who have been instrumental in Argentina’s triumph in the tournament.
The final will be a match of interesting tactical chess, as the two coaches met years ago in a classroom. Former teacher and student will be on opposite touchlines as the biggest prize in football is at stake on Sunday in New York.
