Paris Saint-Germain F.C. took a narrow advantage into the second leg of their Champions League semifinal after a breathtaking 5-4 victory over FC Bayern Munich in Paris on Tuesday, in the highest-scoring semifinal match in the competition’s history.
The first leg at the Parc des Princes delivered a spectacle from start to finish, with both sides showcasing the attacking quality that has made them Europe’s standout teams this season.
Bayern struck first in the 17th minute when Harry Kane converted a penalty after Luis Diaz was brought down in the area. It was another milestone in a remarkable season for the England captain, who has been central to Bayern’s prolific scoring campaign.
PSG responded quickly through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who produced a trademark run from the left before cutting inside and curling an excellent finish into the far corner. The hosts then moved ahead when João Neves rose highest to head home from an Ousmane Dembélé corner.
The visitors hit back through Michael Olise, whose powerful strike restored parity. Yet PSG regained the lead just before half-time after a VAR review awarded a penalty for handball against Alphonso Davies. Dembélé calmly converted to send the French champions into the break with a 3-2 advantage.
PSG took control after the restart. Kvaratskhelia struck again in the 56th minute, finishing from Achraf Hakimi’s precise delivery. Moments later, Dembélé added his second of the night, beating Manuel Neuer at the near post to put the hosts 5-2 ahead and seemingly in command.
But Bayern refused to fold. Dayot Upamecano headed in from a Joshua Kimmich free-kick to reduce the deficit, before Luis Diaz capped a fine individual run with a composed finish to make it 5-4.
A late PSG effort from Senny Mayulu rattled the crossbar, preserving Bayern’s hopes ahead of next week’s return leg at the Allianz Arena.
PSG captain Marquinhos described the contest as a dream occasion for players and fans alike. Bayern, meanwhile, left Paris encouraged by their late resurgence.
The second leg in Munich will decide who advances to the final in Budapest on May 30. PSG are chasing back-to-back European titles, while Bayern are seeking a first final appearance since lifting the trophy in 2020.
