Manchester United moved to the verge of securing a return to the UEFA Champions League after a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday, with first-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko proving enough to seal all three points.
The win lifts United to 61 points and strengthens their hold on third place in the Premier League. With four matches remaining, they now sit 11 points clear of sixth-placed Brighton, meaning qualification for next season’s Champions League is firmly within reach. The top five teams will earn a place in Europe’s premier club competition.
United made an energetic start, immediately putting Brentford under pressure. Within two minutes, Kobbie Mainoo surged into the penalty area before finding Amad Diallo, whose effort took a deflection and went behind for a corner.
Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was called into action soon after, producing an excellent save to keep out Harry Maguire’s close-range header in the eighth minute. But the visitors were unable to withstand the sustained pressure for long.
United took the lead in the 11th minute when Maguire once again rose highest from a corner, directing the ball back across goal. Casemiro reacted quickest, slipping behind the Brentford defence to head home from a tight angle.
Brentford had opportunities to respond, but struggled to make them count. Igor Thiago, in particular, endured a frustrating first half. The striker missed a golden chance in the 35th minute when he lost his footing just as he prepared to shoot with the goal at his mercy.
United punished that miss almost immediately. Two minutes later, Bruno Fernandes led a swift counter-attack, carrying the ball forward before picking out Sesko. The Slovenian forward calmly worked space for himself before driving a powerful finish into the net to double the home side’s advantage.
The second half was more evenly contested, with United focused on protecting their lead. Brentford pushed forward in search of a way back into the game and finally found one in the 87th minute when Mathias Jensen struck unexpectedly to set up a tense finale.
Despite the late pressure, United held firm to secure a crucial victory.
Sesko said the team remained focused on finishing the season strongly.
“We have to keep pushing until the last minute,” he said. “We knew Brentford would be difficult, but we managed the game well and deserved the win.”
United now turn their attention to a pivotal clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday. Brentford, meanwhile, remain ninth on 48 points and continue to harbour hopes of qualifying for European competition next season.
