Atlético Madrid and Arsenal F.C. played out a tense 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal on Wednesday, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of next week’s return match in London.
Arsenal took the lead just before halftime when Viktor Gyokeres converted a penalty after being fouled in the area. The Swedish striker kept his composure, driving his effort beyond Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak after David Hancko was judged to have pushed him from behind.
The visitors had spent much of the opening period on the back foot as Atletico controlled possession and pressed high. Julian Alvarez threatened early, forcing a sharp save from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, while the home side looked the more dangerous team in the early exchanges.
Despite Atletico’s dominance, Arsenal remained disciplined defensively and capitalised on one of their few clear openings. Gyokeres’s goal gave Mikel Arteta’s side a valuable advantage heading into the break.
Atletico responded strongly after halftime and found their equaliser in the 55th minute. Ben White was penalised for handball after blocking a shot from Marcos Llorente, with the ball striking his outstretched arm. Alvarez stepped up and powered his penalty into the net, making amends for a recent spot-kick miss in domestic cup action.
The Argentine forward’s goal lifted the home side, who pushed for a winner in front of a packed Metropolitano Stadium. Antoine Griezmann came close, clipping the crossbar before sending the rebound over, while Ademola Lookman twice tested Raya as Atletico intensified the pressure.
Arsenal, however, stood firm and nearly regained the lead late on. Substitute Eberechi Eze went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Hancko, and the referee initially pointed to the spot. After a VAR review, the decision was overturned, sparking frustration on the Arsenal bench.
“I’m incredibly fuming,” Arteta said after the match. “It’s a clear and very obvious penalty.”
Still, the Arsenal manager acknowledged the challenge of playing in Madrid. “Here, you have to suffer. Many teams have suffered here, including some of the best in the world,” he said.
Atletico captain Koke praised his team’s second-half display, saying the performance showed what Diego Simeone’s side is capable of at this level.
The result leaves everything to play for in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium next Tuesday. Arsenal, seeking a first Champions League final appearance since 2006, will feel confident at home, while Atletico continue their pursuit of a first European crown after three previous final defeats.
