Germany Opens Doors with New Points-Based Opportunity Card: How to Apply?

Seeking skilled professionals, Germany has introduced the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), a new visa program that simplifies entry for qualified non-EU citizens. This points-based system allows applicants to assess their eligibility and potentially gain residency while searching for a job in Germany.

Germany Opportunity Card for Job Seekers

To qualify, individuals need to meet minimum requirements and score at least 6 points based on a set of criteria. This includes education, work experience, language skills, age, ties to Germany, and financial self-sufficiency.

Here’s a breakdown of how points are awarded:

  • Education & Experience: Points are granted for completed vocational training and relevant professional experience, with additional points for qualifications recognized in Germany. Working in a field with a shortage in Germany can also boost your score.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in German is highly valued, with points awarded for B2 or higher levels. Basic German or strong English (C1 level) can also earn points.
  • Age: Younger applicants (under 35) receive an advantage with more points.
  • Ties to Germany: Previous stays in Germany for at least 6 months (excluding tourist visas) can contribute points.
  • Additional Considerations: Spouses meeting the requirements and applying together can earn bonus points.

Financial self-sufficiency is a key factor. Applicants can demonstrate this by having a blocked account with a minimum balance or by securing a part-time job (up to 20 hours per week) upon arrival.

With an application fee of €75, the Opportunity Card offers a streamlined path for skilled professionals to enter Germany and find employment. By meeting the requirements and accumulating enough points, individuals can gain residency in Europe’s largest economy and kickstart their careers in Germany.
