Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha has cautioned that Liverpool FC remain a major threat despite their inconsistent form, as the two sides prepare to meet in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Speaking ahead of the first leg at the Parc des Princes, Vitinha stressed that Liverpool’s recent struggles should not be underestimated. “Liverpool are Liverpool, even if they are not in ideal form. They are still a great team,” he said on Tuesday, adding that PSG would need to perform at their highest level to secure a positive result.
The tie renews a rivalry from last season’s knockout stage, when PSG overturned a first-leg defeat in Paris to eliminate Liverpool on penalties after a dramatic return leg at Anfield. The French side went on to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time, while Liverpool secured the Premier League title.
This season, however, Liverpool have found it difficult to maintain consistency under manager Arne Slot. They enter the match following a heavy 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and have managed just one win in their last five matches across all competitions. Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, their qualification for next season’s Champions League remains uncertain.
Vitinha recalled last year’s encounter as a turning point for PSG. He said the team felt frustrated after losing the first leg despite dominating play, but believed they could turn things around in England. “We played well and still lost, but we knew we could go there and win,” he said, noting that both teams have evolved since then.
Liverpool’s squad has also changed, with Hugo Ekitike emerging as a key player. The striker, who previously had a brief spell at PSG, has scored 17 goals this season and is expected to play a central role in the tie. Vitinha described him as a talented player, wishing him success beyond the two upcoming matches.
PSG coach Luis Enrique confirmed that his side will be without midfielder Fabián Ruiz, who is still recovering from a knee injury, while winger Bradley Barcola is also unlikely to feature despite returning to training.
Luis Enrique dismissed suggestions that PSG are favourites, pointing to last season’s outcome as proof that predictions can be misleading. With both teams aiming for a place in the semi-finals, the stage is set for another closely contested encounter between two of Europe’s leading clubs.
