Hamas Rejects Disarmament, Calls Weapons a “Red Line”

A senior Hamas leader, Sami Abu Zuhri, has declared that the group’s weapons are not up for negotiation, rejecting any proposal to trade arms for humanitarian aid or reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip.

“The weapon of the resistance is a red line, and it is not negotiable,” Abu Zuhri told Reuters. He emphasized that Hamas would not accept any agreement that requires disarmament in exchange for rebuilding Gaza or facilitating aid deliveries.

His remarks come in response to Israel’s firm stance on disarming Hamas as a condition for progressing with the ongoing ceasefire discussions.

Israel Demands Complete Disarmament

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar reiterated on Tuesday that Israel’s conditions for advancing to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement include:

• The complete disarmament of the Gaza Strip
• The release of all Israeli captives held by Hamas
• The removal of Hamas from power

Israel has maintained that no long-term resolution is possible without meeting these conditions. However, Hamas has repeatedly rejected such demands, insisting on maintaining its military capabilities.

Ceasefire Talks in Jeopardy

The second phase of the ceasefire deal was expected to include the release of more Israeli captives. However, Hamas has stated that no further captives will be freed until a new agreement is reached, raising concerns that the talks could stall.

There are also growing fears that Israel may resume military operations in Gaza once hostages are returned, particularly amid pressure from far-right members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition who oppose any compromise with Hamas.

As ceasefire negotiations remain uncertain, tensions in the region continue to escalate, with no clear resolution in sight.
