WhatsApp Introduces Monetisation and Advertising Tools in Updates Tab

WhatsApp Introduces Monetisation and Advertising Tools in Updates Tab

In a significant move to expand its business offerings while maintaining user privacy, WhatsApp has rolled out a series of new features for its Updates tab. The enhancements include monetisation options for Channel creators and new advertising tools aimed at helping businesses grow their presence on the platform.

The Updates tab, which houses both Status and Channels, has seen rapid growth in engagement, with more than 1.5 billion users accessing it daily, according to WhatsApp. The Meta-owned messaging platform said the new features are designed to improve content discovery while opening up revenue opportunities for creators and organisations.

“We’re encouraged by the enthusiasm for the Updates tab and want to help admins, organisations, and businesses grow on WhatsApp,” the company said in a statement released via its official blog.

Key Additions

Three major features headline this update:

  • Channel Subscriptions: Users will soon have the option to pay a monthly fee to access exclusive content from their preferred Channels.

  • Promoted Channels: Admins can now pay to increase their visibility in the Channel directory, helping them reach broader audiences.

  • Ads in Status: Businesses will be able to place ads in the Status section, allowing users to interact directly with them from within the app.

WhatsApp was quick to clarify that these changes will remain confined to the Updates tab, and personal messaging will remain ad-free and unchanged. “If you only use WhatsApp to chat with friends and loved ones, there is no change to your experience at all,” the company assured users.

Commitment to Privacy

Maintaining its stance on privacy, WhatsApp confirmed that personal messages, calls, and statuses remain end-to-end encrypted. It added that advertising content would be based on limited information such as the user’s city, language, and followed Channels.

“For users who have linked their WhatsApp with Meta’s Accounts Center, ad preferences and activity across Meta apps may also influence what is shown,” the statement read. The company reiterated that it will not share or sell users’ phone numbers or access private content for ad targeting.

A Business-Friendly Ecosystem

WhatsApp framed the Updates tab as a growing ecosystem for businesses to connect with users in a non-intrusive way. With over 1.5 billion daily visitors, the platform sees strong potential for brands to engage through Status ads or broaden their outreach via Promoted Channels.

The launch marks a carefully considered step toward monetisation without compromising WhatsApp’s core value of privacy. “We believe the Updates tab is the right place for these features,” the company said.
