UAE Thrash Qatar 5-0 in World Cup Qualifier as Fabio Lima Nets Four

The United Arab Emirates delivered a commanding performance in Abu Dhabi yesterday, crushing Qatar 5-0 in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Fabio Lima stole the spotlight, scoring four goals, including a first-half hat-trick, to strengthen the UAE’s position in third place in the group standings.

Lima opened the scoring in the fourth minute, capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Yahya Al-Ghassani. He doubled the lead with a penalty just before halftime and completed his hat-trick in stoppage time with a stunning free-kick. The Brazil-born playmaker added his fourth goal, again from the penalty spot, in the 56th minute, while Al-Ghassani rounded off the rout with a late strike in the 73rd minute.

This result builds on the UAE’s earlier 3-1 victory over Qatar in September and boosts their points tally to 10 from six matches. The team now trails second-placed Uzbekistan by three points and group leaders Iran by six.

Qatar’s campaign suffered a major setback with the loss, leaving them in fourth place with seven points. The defeat follows what seemed to be a resurgence after their dramatic last-minute victory over Uzbekistan last week.

Early Goals Derailed Qatar’s Strategy

Qatar coach Félix Sánchez faced mounting pressure following the result. “The early goal disrupted our plans, and the UAE outperformed us,” Sánchez admitted. “We couldn’t capitalize on the momentum from our last match, and individual mistakes cost us dearly.”

Despite recent struggles, Sánchez expressed cautious optimism, noting that hopes remain alive for direct qualification or playoff spots.

Dominance from the UAE

The UAE made an ideal start with Al-Ghassani surging down the left wing to set up Lima for the opener. Qatar had opportunities to equalize, with Boualem Khouki and Mohammed Waad coming close. Waad’s effort hit the post after a clever play by Akram Afif, but the hosts remained in control.

Lima’s penalty in the 45th minute came after Harib Abdalla was fouled by Lucas Mendes. Minutes later, Lima showcased his brilliance with a free-kick that curled past Qatar’s goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham.

Barsham’s foul on Al-Ghassani early in the second half led to Lima’s fourth goal, extending the UAE’s dominance. Qatar’s Ahmed Fathy struck the crossbar in search of a consolation, but it was Al-Ghassani who sealed the result with a composed finish on the counterattack.

What’s Next

The qualifiers now pause for three months, with Qatar hosting North Korea on March 20. The UAE will look to maintain their momentum when they face group leaders Iran in a crucial clash.
