Apple has launched its first suite of artificial intelligence features, branded as “Apple Intelligence,” in a major software update across its devices. Released on Monday, the update includes iOS 18.1 for iPhones, iPadOS 18.1 for iPads, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 for Mac computers, introducing AI-driven capabilities to millions of users.
Apple Intelligence leverages the processing power of Apple silicon to perform tasks like understanding and generating language, creating images, and making contextual recommendations. According to Apple, the system enhances productivity by streamlining tasks across apps, all while maintaining the company’s high privacy standards.
“Apple Intelligence introduces a new era for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, delivering brand-new experiences and tools that will transform what our users can accomplish,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement. “This technology builds on years of innovation in AI and machine learning, placing our generative models at the core of our devices while prioritizing user privacy.”
Among the key features rolled out in this update is an improved Siri, Apple’s voice-activated assistant. Siri now has a more natural-sounding voice and enhanced conversational abilities, making it easier for users to engage in extended interactions and follow-up questions without rephrasing commands. Additionally, Apple Intelligence introduces advanced writing and summarization tools, as well as enhanced photo-editing options, all powered by Apple’s proprietary AI models.
Apple Intelligence is compatible only with devices equipped with the latest Apple Pro chips, limiting the features to select models. Supported devices include the iPhone 16 series (16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max), iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as iPads powered by the A17 Pro or M1 chips and later versions.
The move represents Apple’s response to rising demand for AI-powered tools that are integrated seamlessly into devices while maintaining user privacy. Unlike cloud-based AI models, which often require internet access and store user data externally, Apple’s approach emphasizes on-device processing. This ensures that data remains on users’ devices, which the company says is a major step forward for privacy in AI.
The new Apple Intelligence tools are expected to be especially beneficial for users seeking efficiency in everyday tasks, from photo editing to communication and organization. Cook noted that this release represents only the first phase of Apple’s AI roadmap, with future updates expected to bring additional features and improvements.
The release of Apple Intelligence marks a milestone for the company as it continues to integrate AI deeper into its product ecosystem, offering users more personalized experiences while enhancing device security. Analysts expect Apple’s AI capabilities to expand with subsequent updates, setting the stage for competitive growth in the tech giant’s AI portfolio.
