OpenAI has announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT’s web search capabilities, aimed at improving the online shopping experience for users by offering personalized product recommendations complete with images, reviews, and direct links to purchase items.
The update, rolled out Monday, will be integrated into OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4o, and will be available to all users across Free, Plus, and Pro plans — even for those not logged in. The feature allows users to receive tailored product suggestions across a range of categories, including fashion, beauty, electronics, and home goods, based on specific search queries.
In a move that distinguishes ChatGPT from traditional search engines, OpenAI emphasized that the shopping tool will be entirely free of advertisements and that the company will not receive commissions or compensation from purchases made through the platform.
“Our goal is to offer unbiased, user-first results,” OpenAI said in a statement. “The recommendations are determined using structured metadata like pricing, descriptions, and customer reviews from third-party sources.”
The feature builds on ChatGPT’s growing role as a search engine alternative. Since the introduction of its web browsing tool last year, ChatGPT has handled over 1 billion web searches in the past week alone, according to the company. The surge in usage underscores a broader trend of users turning to generative AI for more personalized, context-aware assistance.
The timing of the update also reflects OpenAI’s broader ambitions to challenge search giant Google, particularly as users grow weary of ad-heavy search results and seek more direct, streamlined experiences. By focusing on relevance and transparency, OpenAI hopes to position ChatGPT as a smarter and more intuitive alternative for information and shopping alike.
Earlier this year, a company spokesperson revealed that ChatGPT had surpassed 400 million weekly active users as of February, marking a sharp rise in engagement since its public debut in late 2022.
As competition in the AI and search space intensifies, OpenAI’s latest move signals a shift toward practical consumer applications, further blurring the line between chatbots and traditional search engines.
