In an emphatic display, PSV Eindhoven clinched their first Champions League win of the season with a decisive 4-0 triumph over Girona at the Philips Stadion. Goals from Ryan Flamingo and Malik Tillman, as well as a strike by Johan Bakayoko and an own goal by Girona’s Ladislav Krejci, propelled the Dutch side into the play-off places with five points. Girona, struggling at the lower end of the standings with three points, were further hampered by a red card for captain Arnau Martinez early in the second half.

PSV started strong, with Flamingo netting his first Champions League goal just 16 minutes into the match. Flamingo capitalized on a long throw from Tillman, though replays later suggested Tillman’s foot may have crossed the line during the throw, which could have led to the goal being disallowed. The officials, however, did not spot the infraction, and the goal stood, giving PSV an early edge.

Tillman soon doubled PSV’s advantage after breaking through Girona’s defense unchallenged and skillfully slotting the ball into the far corner of the net. PSV continued to push forward, with Luuk de Jong nearly adding a third goal, but his shot from close range struck the post, keeping Girona’s deficit at two.

Girona’s troubles deepened in the 55th minute when Martinez was shown a second yellow card for a late tackle, leaving the Spanish side down to ten men. PSV quickly capitalized, with Bakayoko’s low drive finding the bottom corner after a darting run along the edge of the box. The match was effectively sealed two minutes from time when Krejci inadvertently deflected a shot into his own net, capping a dominant night for PSV.

Despite their limited offensive opportunities, Girona forced PSV’s goalkeeper Walter Benitez into action early on. Benitez showcased his reflexes with a double save, denying both Krejci’s low shot and a follow-up effort by Bojan Miovski. However, PSV controlled most of the play, with Girona managing few attempts on goal as the Dutch side dictated the tempo.

Meanwhile, in another Champions League fixture, Dinamo Zagreb overwhelmed Slovan Bratislava 4-1. Despite a quick goal by Bratislava’s David Strelec within the opening five minutes, Dinamo responded assertively. Dario Spikic equalized shortly after, and Petar Sucic gave Dinamo the lead with a goal on the half-hour mark. Sandro Kulenovic then added a brace in the second half, securing a comfortable victory for the visitors.

These results place Dinamo Zagreb firmly in the playoff section with seven points, while Bratislava continues to search for their first points after four matches. PSV, now with five points, will look to carry this momentum as they aim to solidify their Champions League campaign, while Girona’s struggles keep them outside the knockout zone.
