Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain booked their place in the UEFA Champions League final after securing a tense 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, completing a 6-5 aggregate victory in a hard-fought semifinal clash.
The French side entered the second leg in Munich holding a narrow 5-4 advantage from last week’s high-scoring encounter in Paris and managed to withstand heavy Bayern pressure to keep their European title defence alive.
Ousmane Dembele gave PSG the ideal start when he struck after only three minutes, finishing clinically from a cutback by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The early goal stunned the home crowd and forced Bayern to chase the game for much of the night.
The German champions responded quickly and dominated possession for long periods, but PSG’s organised defence frustrated the hosts throughout a cagier contest than the first-leg thriller.
Bayern pushed forward relentlessly in search of goals, with Michael Olize and Luis Diaz both going close from distance during the opening half.
Despite Bayern’s pressure, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was also called into action, producing an important save to deny Joao Neves in the 33rd minute and keep the tie within reach for the hosts.
At the other end, PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov made a crucial stop shortly before halftime, blocking a close-range effort from Jamal Musiala.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Bayern controlling possession while PSG looked dangerous on the counterattack. As the German side committed more players forward, spaces began to open for the visitors, who threatened through Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue late in the match.
Bayern finally found a breakthrough deep into stoppage time when Harry Kane drilled home an equaliser for his seventh straight Champions League game with a goal. It was Kane’s 55th goal in all competitions this season, but it arrived too late to change the outcome of the tie.
PSG coach Luis Enrique praised his players after guiding the club to a second consecutive Champions League final.
The French champions will now face Arsenal in the final in Budapest on May 30 after the Premier League side eliminated Atletico Madrid in the other semifinal.
For Bayern, the defeat ended hopes of completing a treble this season, leaving the German Cup as the only remaining trophy to add to their Bundesliga title.
