Paris Saint-Germain defeated Manchester City 4-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the English club following an independent commission’s ruling that it breached Premier League financial regulations.
The European champions produced a dominant first-half performance at the Etihad Stadium, scoring three goals in the opening 35 minutes through Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha. Manchester City fought back after the break, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, but the comeback fell short.
Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal advantage before Haaland struck again to give the hosts hope of rescuing a result. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma then saved a late penalty from Ferran Torres to preserve the French side’s two-goal victory.
The defeat came during City’s first home match since the commission found the club guilty of more than 100 alleged breaches of financial rules. The 10-time English champions could face severe sanctions if they fail to overturn the ruling through an appeal.
City had responded to the uncertainty by beating Liverpool 3-0 on Sunday, maintaining their position at the top of the Premier League. However, PSG demonstrated their quality with a performance that underlined their status as contenders for a third consecutive Champions League title.
Former City manager Pep Guardiola returned to the Etihad for the first time since leaving in May. He sat behind chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano in a show of support for the club’s leadership.
Before kick-off, City screened a video celebrating major moments in their history, including achievements before and after the Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008. Supporters also unfurled a banner reading, “I’m City till I die.”
The atmosphere of defiance was followed by a difficult first half for the hosts. PSG coach Luis Enrique left Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the bench, giving Doue an opportunity to start on the left wing.
Doue opened the scoring with a shot from outside the box that caught Donnarumma out at his near post after a rapid counter-attack. Two minutes later, Dembele finished a move involving an intricate exchange with Doue, heading the ball into the net at the far post.
Achraf Hakimi struck the post before Vitinha added PSG’s third with a powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area.
City made three substitutions at half-time and improved after the interval. Haaland headed home a cross from Iliman Ndiaye, but PSG responded when Akliouche’s effort looped over the goalkeeper and into the net after Donnarumma got a hand to the ball.
Nuno Mendes cleared brilliantly off his own goal line, while Haaland later hit the crossbar before scoring his second of the night.
Donnarumma’s penalty save prevented a fifth PSG goal and completed a disappointing evening for City.
The result strengthened PSG’s position in European football as City continued to face questions over the financial case that could affect the club’s standing and achievements over the past 15 years.
