Novak Djokovic Cruises Into Australian Open Third Round

Novak Djokovic delivered a commanding performance against Italian qualifier Francesco Maestrelli, defeating him 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday to reach the third round of the Australian Open. The fourth seed continues his pursuit of a record-extending 11th Melbourne Park title and 25th Grand Slam trophy, which would move him level with Margaret Court’s historic record.

The 38-year-old Djokovic controlled the match from the outset, breaking Maestrelli in the second game of the first set and never letting up. His experience and precision left the world number 141 struggling to mount any sustained challenge, and the top seed efficiently closed out each set without needing to play at his maximum.

Djokovic’s second set began with an immediate break, putting additional pressure on Maestrelli. The Italian had only a few opportunities to turn the match around but failed to capitalize, allowing Djokovic to maintain momentum. An acrobatic backhand brought Djokovic a set point, and he sealed the frame with an unreturned shot down the same side, moving closer to his 399th Grand Slam match victory and his 101st win in Melbourne, just one shy of Roger Federer’s tournament record.

Maestrelli briefly rallied in the third set, recovering a break after conceding two, but Djokovic quickly reasserted control. The champion’s combination of precise baseline shots and tactical net play left little room for error, allowing him to close out the match comfortably.

With this victory, Djokovic advances to face either Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands or China’s Juncheng Shang in the third round. Analysts note that the win reflects Djokovic’s ability to manage his energy while staying firmly in command, an approach that has sustained his dominance at the Australian Open over the past decade.

Djokovic’s continued success at Melbourne Park highlights his resilience and adaptability, even as younger players emerge on the tour. His performance also underscores his reputation as one of the most consistent and strategic players in men’s tennis history, capable of dismantling opponents without displaying his full arsenal.

For Maestrelli, the match offered valuable experience on the Grand Slam stage, revealing areas to refine against top-tier competition. Meanwhile, Djokovic remains on course to extend his impressive record at the Australian Open and maintain his pursuit of tennis history.
