McIlroy Stays in Irish Open Contention After Windy Opening Round

Rory McIlroy battled strong winds and a slow pace of play to remain in contention at the Irish Open after carding a one-under-par 71 in his opening round on Thursday.

The Northern Irishman finished four shots behind leader Joaquin Niemann and endured difficult conditions at the Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, County Clare, where US President Donald Trump is expected to attend the event over the weekend.

McIlroy is defending the Irish Open title and is seeking his first tournament victory since winning his second Masters green jacket at Augusta National in April.

The world number two made a double bogey six on the 13th hole, but recovered to limit the damage and finished the round with only one other dropped shot. Strong winds made scoring difficult throughout the day and contributed to lengthy delays on the course.

“I hung in there, shot under par, and at least don’t feel like I’m out of the tournament. A good day tomorrow gets me right back in it,” McIlroy said.

He identified both the weather and the slow pace as major challenges.

“There were a couple of things that were tough today. Obviously the wind and the strength of the wind was one thing, and then the pace of play,” he said.

McIlroy also said the course made it difficult for players to establish any rhythm, particularly during the first two days when the large field resulted in frequent stops and delays.

Niemann took advantage of his late opportunities, producing four consecutive birdies from the 14th hole to move to the top of the leaderboard.

The Chilean described the course as difficult but enjoyable, particularly with the unpredictable Irish weather.

“It’s a really tricky course and a really fun golf course to play, especially with the Irish weather,” Niemann said. “I’m getting used to this weather and the rain, so it was fun.”

The conditions caused several players to fall behind schedule, with some golfers required to return early on Friday to complete their first rounds.

Irish favourite Shane Lowry was among a group of five players two shots behind Niemann after recording a three-under-par 67.

Adrian Meronk, Maximilian Steinlechner and Renato Paratore were also three under when fading light halted play before they could complete their rounds.

Former world number one Jon Rahm, making a rare appearance on the DP World Tour, finished his completed holes at level par.

With the tournament still in its early stages, McIlroy will aim to close the gap on the leaders in the second round and build momentum in his title defence.
