Eintracht Frankfurt will need a near-perfect performance to overcome Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Sunday, as they aim to solidify their push for a top-four finish.
With 22 of 34 league matches played, Frankfurt sits third in the table and is on track for their first top-four finish since the 1992-93 season. Following their 2022 Europa League triumph and first-ever Champions League appearance, another shot at Europe’s elite competition would be a fitting reward for coach Dino Toppmöller’s squad, despite the departure of star forward Omar Marmoush to Manchester City.
However, Sunday’s clash at Allianz Arena presents a daunting challenge. Bayern lead the league by eight points over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen and are poised to reclaim the Bundesliga title. Despite being underdogs, Frankfurt has reason for optimism after holding Bayern to a 3-3 draw in October, one of only four teams to take points off the champions this season.
Frankfurt captain Kevin Trapp acknowledged the uphill task, stating, “We are third and Bayern are 13 points ahead of us—that speaks volumes. We need to be close to perfect to get a point or more.”
Bayern enter the match following back-to-back draws, raising pressure to avoid a potential slump. The hosts are likely to be without star striker Harry Kane, who was substituted at halftime during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Celtic. Frankfurt, meanwhile, will be missing defender Robin Koch, while midfielder Mario Götze remains doubtful due to illness.
Toppmöller emphasized the need for a solid game plan, top performance, and a bit of luck. “We must stay composed and show a high tolerance for frustration,” he said.
Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen visit last-placed Holstein Kiel, aiming to keep their slim title hopes alive. Coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged the difficulty of overtaking Bayern but remained optimistic. “Everything can happen—there are still many games,” Alonso remarked.
In Dortmund, English winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is seeking to end a nine-game goal drought. Coach Niko Kovac expressed confidence in the 20-year-old’s development, encouraging patience as the player works to regain his early-season form.
As the Bundesliga season heads into its final stretch, Frankfurt’s showdown with Bayern could prove pivotal in shaping the league standings, with both sides determined to achieve their goals.
