DP World ILT20 Gains Reputation as Key Platform for UAE and Regional Talent

DP World ILT20 Gains Reputation as Key Platform for UAE and Regional Talent

The DP World ILT20 is emerging as a major competitive cricket league while playing a vital role in developing UAE and regional players, according to former New Zealand international and tournament commentator Simon Doull.

“The standard in general has been great, and it’s getting better year-on-year. That’s one of the things that’s impressed me most,” Doull said. He has been associated with the league since its inaugural season and has observed the tournament’s impact on local talent.

“The standard of the local players is lifting, courtesy of being part of this tournament over the last two or three years. We’re seeing more of them being trusted with important roles, and that’s a real positive from this season,” Doull added.

Doull highlighted Khuzaima Tanveer, a bowler for the Desert Vipers, as a standout performer. “He’s got good pace, good variations, and he’s used the facilities really well. He’s been a big part of why the Desert Vipers have been so strong this season.”

Experienced players have also delivered consistent performances. Muhammad Waseem, who scored 335 runs to become the tournament’s top scorer, has been pivotal for his team, Doull noted. Sam Curran has impressed as an all-rounder, contributing 323 runs and seven wickets, demonstrating the balance between batting and bowling in the league.

Doull praised the timing and structure of the tournament, noting that it fits well into the cricket calendar. “The window this year has been critical. It’s a great time of year to play and fits nicely into the calendar. I think it will only continue to improve,” he said.

The tournament is expanding its regional reach by including one player from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in each franchise. Doull said this provides crucial opportunities for emerging players. “The league started with a focus on developing UAE players, and now it’s expanding into regional growth. Being involved with franchises, training around experienced players, and taking that learning back home is crucial for lifting standards,” he said.

The league’s Player Development Initiative has also brought in seven African cricketers this season, exposing them to international talent such as Kieron Pollard, Phil Salt, Jason Roy, and Liam Livingstone. Doull highlighted the long-term benefits for young players. “For any young player who gets that opportunity, being able to train alongside international stars is massive. You pick their brains, have conversations after net sessions, and take that knowledge back with you to help others improve.”

Waqar Salamkheil of the Dubai Capitals has emerged as the top wicket-taker with 17 wickets, showcasing the continued relevance of spin bowling in T20 cricket. “We once thought T20 cricket might be the death of spin, but that hasn’t been the case at all. Every franchise wants quality wrist spin, and these grounds are a great size to utilize it properly,” Doull said.

The league’s emphasis on situational awareness is evident in batting trends, with the top five run-scorers maintaining strike rates below 135. Doull emphasized adaptability as a key skill in modern T20 cricket.
