Coventry End 25-Year Premier League Wait With Victory at Nottingham Forest

Jay Dasilva scored the decisive goal as Coventry City secured their first Premier League victory in 25 years with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, giving Frank Lampard’s team a much-needed boost after a difficult start to the season.

Coventry, promoted to the Premier League after winning the Championship last season, had endured a demanding opening schedule that included away matches against Arsenal and Manchester City.

Their problems deepened last weekend when they suffered a 5-0 home defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion. The result left Coventry without a point or a goal from their opening four matches and with a goal difference of minus 10.

They produced a much stronger performance at Forest and were rewarded in the 55th minute.

Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth launched a long pass forward, which Dasilva controlled expertly before cutting inside and curling a shot beyond Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.

Forest pushed for an equaliser late in the match and appeared to have found one when Igor Jesus put the ball in the net. However, the goal was ruled out following a VAR review after Jesus was judged to have clipped the foot of Coventry midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, causing him to stumble.

The decision preserved Coventry’s victory and completed a significant turnaround for a side that had struggled badly in its opening fixtures.

“It feels great, it feels amazing,” Lampard said. “The way the players worked for it. Having lost our first four games in different circumstances, it’s easy to feel negative, like where is the goal, where is the win coming from?”

Lampard said the victory was particularly important for players experiencing the Premier League for the first time.

“The players deserve it. It’s really important for some of the players, for many of them it’s their debut in the Premier League and they need to feel like they belong,” he said.

Coventry’s previous Premier League victory came against Sunderland in April 2001. They were relegated several matches later, ending a 34-year stay in England’s top division.

The club subsequently endured a difficult period that included a spell in the fourth tier before eventually returning to the Premier League.

Saturday’s victory sparked celebrations among the travelling supporters and gave Coventry their first points of the campaign.

Lampard, a three-time Premier League champion as a Chelsea player, cautioned his squad against becoming complacent.

“We have to keep our feet on the ground because it’s one win, and we’ve felt how ruthless the league is already,” he said.

Coventry will now enter the international break with renewed confidence after finally getting their season underway. Lampard said the players deserved time to recover and use the victory as a foundation for the matches ahead.
