After seven runner-up finishes, Cameron Young finally secured his long-awaited first PGA Tour victory on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship, delivering a dominant performance that left no doubt.
The 27-year-old American surged ahead with five consecutive birdies early in the final round to build a commanding nine-shot lead. He maintained his composure through the back nine, finishing with a 2-under 68 to claim the title by six shots at Sedgefield Country Club. Young ended the tournament at 22-under-par 258, tying the tournament scoring record held by J.T. Poston (2019) and Henrik Stenson (2017).
The win marked a milestone in PGA Tour history, as Young became the 1,000th different player to win a recognized PGA Tour event, dating back to Willie Park’s victory in the 1860 British Open.
Mac Meissner shot a final-round 66 to finish second, earning $893,800 and climbing to No. 86 in the FedEx Cup standings. While it wasn’t enough to secure a postseason berth, the result significantly boosts Meissner’s chances of retaining full playing privileges by staying inside the top 100 through November.
With the Wyndham Championship being the final event of the PGA Tour regular season, attention turned to the FedEx Cup standings. Only Chris Kirk managed to move into the top 70 with a tie for fifth, while Byeong Hun An fell out after missing the cut. Matti Schmid’s late surge, including birdies on his final three holes, ensured his place at No. 70 when Davis Thompson three-putted the last hole.
Yamashita Captures Women’s British Open
In Wales, Japan’s Miyu Yamashita claimed her first major title at the Women’s British Open at Royal Porthcawl. Holding off a late charge from England’s Charley Hull, Yamashita carded a 2-under 70 to finish two shots ahead.
Hull trimmed the deficit to one with a birdie on the 14th, but bogeys on the 16th and 17th saw her settle for a 69 and a share of second with Japan’s Minami Katsu. Yamashita’s win marks the fourth major title by a Japanese player in the last nine women’s majors.
