Arsenal moved to the brink of ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title after a tense 1-0 victory over Burnley on Monday night opened a five-point gap at the top of the table.
A first-half header from Kai Havertz proved enough to hand Mikel Arteta’s side another crucial victory at the Emirates Stadium, although the Arsenal forward was fortunate to remain on the pitch after a controversial second-half challenge.
The result leaves Arsenal on the verge of sealing their first league crown since 2004. The title could be secured as early as Tuesday if defending champions Manchester City fail to beat Bournemouth. Even if City win, Arsenal would still claim the trophy with victory away to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Despite Burnley’s relegation already being confirmed, Arsenal were made to battle throughout a nervy contest in north London.
The home side started brightly and nearly broke through when Leandro Trossard struck the post from distance. Bukayo Saka also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after attempting to connect with a low cross from Havertz.
Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough in the 37th minute from a familiar source. Havertz rose above Burnley’s defence to power home Saka’s corner, marking Arsenal’s 18th goal from a set piece in league play this season.
The hosts failed to build on their advantage and were handed a major scare midway through the second half. Havertz caught Lesley Ugochukwu high on the calf with a late challenge that prompted a VAR review. Referee officials decided not to upgrade the original yellow card to a red, allowing Arsenal to avoid playing the closing stages with 10 men.
Arteta quickly substituted Havertz, introducing Viktor Gyokeres as Arsenal looked to regain attacking control. However, Burnley continued to frustrate the league leaders and remained in the match until the final whistle.
Arsenal’s defence once again proved decisive. Since their defeat to Manchester City last month, the Gunners have not conceded a goal in four consecutive league matches, a run that has placed them firmly in control of the title race heading into the final week of the season.
The pressure now shifts to Manchester City, with reports also circulating that manager Pep Guardiola could leave the club after nearly a decade in charge.
