Argentina’s men and Spain’s women clinched the top titles at the FIP World Padel Championships, held yesterday at the Khalifa Tennis & Squash Complex in Doha, marking an intense conclusion to the prestigious tournament. With a packed stadium, fans witnessed Argentina’s men secure a hard-fought victory over Spain, while the Spanish women’s team claimed their sixth consecutive title.
In the men’s final, Argentina successfully defended their title, coming back from a match down to edge out Spain with a 2-1 win, delivering a thrilling performance that avenged the earlier defeat of their female counterparts. The decisive match featured a gripping three-set battle where Argentina’s Leandro Augsburger and Valentín Gomez Libaak triumphed over Spain’s Miguel Yanguas and Francisco Navarro, sealing the victory with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 scoreline. The close finish sparked jubilant celebrations among the Argentine players and fans.
Spain initially took an early lead, thanks to a strong performance by Arturo Coello and Javier Nieto, who overpowered Argentina’s Franco Stupaczuk and Martín Di Nenno with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory. However, Argentina quickly leveled the score when Agustín Tapia and Federico Chingotto — currently ranked second and fourth globally — secured a win against Spain’s Juan Lebron and Alejandro Galan, finishing with scores of 7-6, 3-6, 6-2. In the final match, Augsburger and Libaak displayed resilience, ultimately delivering Argentina’s winning point in a tense third set.
Earlier in the day, Spain’s women’s team maintained their dominance, securing their ninth overall title with a 2-0 victory over Argentina in an emotional final. The Spanish players wore black ribbons in memory of victims of recent floods in Valencia, adding a somber note to the otherwise celebratory occasion.
Spain’s journey to victory began when Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernández defeated Argentina’s Virginia Riera and Julieta Bidahorria with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2. In the second match, Argentina’s Delfi Brea and Claudia Jensen initially pushed back, winning the first set and leading 5-4 in the second. However, Spain’s Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez staged a comeback, securing the next three games to clinch the title.
“It was a very tough match, but we are an incredible team, and we showed that throughout the week,” Sanchez commented after the victory. “At the most important moment, we brought out all our qualities.”
Josemaria added, “The first set was especially tough. We suffered but focused on keeping the ball in play as much as possible. We dedicate this win to the victims of the flood in Valencia.”
The FIP World Padel Championships showcased a week of competitive matches, culminating in a strong show of skill, resilience, and team spirit, highlighting padel’s growing popularity on the international stage.
