President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointments of Tom Homan as head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, signaling a hardline approach on immigration and a focus on “America First” policies in the incoming administration.

In a statement released on his social media platform Truth Social late Sunday, Trump described Homan as “a stalwart on Border Control” and dubbed him the administration’s “Border Czar.” Trump emphasized Homan’s extensive experience with border security, stating, “I am pleased to announce that the former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration.” According to Trump, Homan’s role will encompass oversight of all U.S. borders, including the Southern and Northern borders, and will extend to maritime and aviation security.

“I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders,” Trump added, praising Homan’s track record on border enforcement and emphasizing that Homan would focus on deporting individuals in the country illegally.

Homan’s return marks a continuation of Trump’s earlier stance on immigration, as he led ICE from 2017 to 2019 during Trump’s first term. Homan became a central figure in the administration’s strict immigration policies, including zero-tolerance measures at the U.S.-Mexico border, and has long been an advocate for increased border security. His return to the administration is widely viewed as a reinforcement of Trump’s commitment to heightened immigration enforcement.

In a second major appointment announcement, Trump revealed that Congresswoman Elise Stefanik would be nominated to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. “I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump stated.

Stefanik, a prominent Republican representative from New York and chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, has been a strong ally of Trump and is known for her alignment with the former president’s policies. Throughout her career, Stefanik has been an outspoken advocate for Trump’s “America First” agenda, often championing domestic priorities and supporting a more limited role in global affairs. Her nomination aligns with Trump’s vision of an assertive yet selective approach in international diplomacy.

Trump’s latest appointments underscore his administration’s continued focus on border security, immigration reform, and a nationalist approach to foreign policy. Both appointments signal a return to some of the policies and perspectives that defined Trump’s previous term, with an emphasis on strict border control and a streamlined approach to the nation’s international alliances and commitments. As Trump’s administration begins to take shape, Homan and Stefanik’s roles will likely be instrumental in executing these priorities.
