Earlier, China ordered the closure of the US consulate in Chengdu. The decision to close the US diplomatic mission in the southwestern city of Chengdu came in response to the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the decision was made because China was “stealing” intellectual property.

Tensions are rising between the world’s two major nuclear powers over a number of key issues. President Donald Trump’s administration is in constant conflict with Beijing over trade and the coronavirus pandemic. The two also clash over the implementation of a controversial security law by China in Hong Kong.
