At least 40 people were killed and eight others injured after an overcrowded passenger bus plunged into a rocky ravine in southwestern Pakistan early Friday, officials said.
The accident occurred in Dana Sar, a remote area near the border between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. According to Shahid Rind, spokesperson for the Balochistan government, the bus lost control while traveling along a highway before veering off the road and falling into a deep ravine.
Authorities said the vehicle was carrying significantly more passengers than its intended capacity. In addition to its own passengers, the bus had taken on travelers from another bus that had broken down during the journey, resulting in severe overcrowding.
Emergency response teams rushed to the scene following the crash, launching rescue operations in the rugged terrain. Recovering victims proved difficult because of the steep landscape, while medical teams worked to transport survivors to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Rind said officials were continuing efforts to identify those who lost their lives and provide medical care to the injured. The condition of several survivors was not immediately disclosed.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti expressed sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement, he directed relevant authorities to ensure that all injured passengers receive the best available medical treatment and instructed officials to closely monitor the rescue and relief efforts.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though preliminary reports indicated that the driver lost control of the bus before it left the highway. Authorities are expected to examine whether speeding, mechanical failure or road conditions contributed to the accident.
Fatal road accidents remain a persistent challenge in Pakistan, particularly in mountainous and remote regions where highways often feature sharp bends, steep slopes and limited safety barriers. Overloaded passenger vehicles, aging transport fleets and weak enforcement of traffic regulations have long been cited as major factors behind such incidents.
Transport safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter inspections of commercial vehicles, improved road infrastructure and stronger enforcement of passenger capacity limits to reduce the frequency of deadly crashes.
Friday’s accident is among the deadliest road tragedies reported in Pakistan this year and has once again highlighted concerns over public transport safety. As rescue operations concluded, authorities continued to gather information about the victims while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash remained underway.
