Italian startup Spacewear has secured a deal with Virgin Galactic to design and produce a specialized clothing line for astronauts and space tourists undergoing training, according to the company’s founder. The agreement marks a significant step in the evolution of space tourism fashion, blending cutting-edge technology with high-performance design.

Spacewear founder Corinna Sperandini shared details of the partnership, emphasizing the innovative nature of the suits. “With Virgin Galactic, we will create high-performance suits for individuals preparing for space travel,” Sperandini told Reuters. These suits will be worn during the rigorous training sessions required for passengers embarking on Virgin Galactic’s spaceflights, which offer customers the chance to experience supersonic speeds, microgravity, and a view of the Earth’s curvature.

Founded by British billionaire Richard Branson, Virgin Galactic provides suborbital spaceflights for wealthy passengers seeking the thrill of space exploration. The latest partnership with Spacewear aims to enhance the experience by ensuring that travelers are equipped with comfortable, functional, and stylish training gear.

In addition to the astronaut training suits, the deal also includes the creation of a co-branded “Made in Italy” casual clothing line, inspired by space travel, which will debut in spring-summer 2025. Sperandini likened the concept to the athleisure trend, where athletic wear is adapted for everyday use. “Maybe in the future, we will dress in ‘Spacesure,’ with T-shirts and trousers originally designed for space travelers, featuring innovative materials and attractive designs,” she explained.

Spacewear, known for producing the first Italian interactive wearable spacesuits approved by NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has already established itself as a leader in spacewear design. Their suits were used during Italy’s first suborbital mission in June 2023 and the all-European commercial astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS) known as Axiom Mission-3.

Sperandini revealed that each spacesuit costs approximately €250,000 ($274,150) to produce, reflecting the intricate and complex design process involved in creating gear suitable for space conditions.

The Virgin Galactic collaboration follows similar recent moves in the fashion-tech space. In October, Italian fashion group Prada and Texas-based Axiom Space announced a partnership to design NASA’s lunar spacesuits for the upcoming Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2025. The growing interest in space-inspired fashion underscores the increasing intersection of luxury, design, and space exploration.
