India Marks 80 Years of Independence with Focus on Growth and Saudi Partnership

India is marking its 80th Independence Day with a message focused on economic development, technological progress and stronger international partnerships, while highlighting the deep ties between India and Saudi Arabia.

The occasion is being used to remember the men and women whose sacrifices secured India’s freedom, as well as generations that helped build democratic institutions and support the country’s development since 1947.

India is now pursuing its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The country’s real gross domestic product grew by 7.7 percent in 2025-26, while investment continues in manufacturing, infrastructure and emerging technologies.

The government’s “Make in India, Make for the World” approach has encouraged growth in sectors including electronics, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors and clean technology. The PM GatiShakti programme is also supporting integrated development of roads, railways, ports, airports and logistics networks.

India has strengthened economic links with several major partners. New economic agreements with Britain and Oman entered into force this year, while trade negotiations with the European Union and New Zealand have concluded.

Technology remains central to India’s development plans. The country is expanding work in artificial intelligence, semiconductor production, quantum technology and advanced computing, building on its digital public infrastructure.

India’s space programme is also expanding. Following the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission and Aditya-L1 solar mission, preparations are continuing for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. Private-sector participation has also grown, with Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-I becoming the first orbital rocket launched from Indian soil by a private Indian company.

The country is also pursuing cleaner energy through renewable power and the National Green Hydrogen Mission. An indigenous hydrogen fuel cell-powered train completed its first journey between Jind and Sonipat in July.

The anniversary also highlights India’s growing relationship with Saudi Arabia. The strategic partnership between the two countries covers energy, trade, defence, technology, culture and people-to-people relations.

Around 2.7 million Indians live and work in Saudi Arabia, contributing to sectors such as healthcare, engineering, education, technology, construction and business. Their presence has become an important link between the two countries.

The Indian Consulate General in Jeddah continues to provide consular and community services, including emergency assistance and outreach programmes. Hajj remains another important part of bilateral cooperation, with Indian and Saudi authorities working together to support pilgrims.

Cultural exchanges have also expanded through Indian music, cinema, yoga, cuisine, literature and educational programmes. Young people have received particular attention through cultural, academic and technology-focused initiatives.

As India enters its 80th year as an independent country, the message is one of continued development and closer global engagement. Indian officials have also expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia’s leadership and people for their friendship, support for Indian pilgrims and the welcome extended to the Indian community.

Independence Day celebrations are expected to reinforce the country’s ambition to build a prosperous, innovative and sustainable future while remaining a reliable international partner.
