Danish Prime Minister Surprised on cancellation of Trump’s Visit to Denmark

Donald Trump, US President has canceled his visit to Denmark after Danish Prime Minister statement that Greenland is not for sale to the USA. President Trump had a scheduled visit on 2nd September as Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II invited him. However, Mr. Trump proposed last week that the US is interested to buy Greenland, which is an autonomous territory in Denmark. Danish PM expressed this suggestion as absurd and said I hope Mr. Trump was not serious about this.

Danish Prime Minister

Mr. Trump in his tweet on Tuesday said that Denmark is a very special country and his planned visit would no longer go ahead because PM Frederiksen of Denmark has no interest in a discussion about the sale of Greenland.

Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time….

The spokesman of White House has confirmed the cancellation of President visit to Denmark. Moreover, the Royal house of Denmark also confirmed the cancellation of Trump visit and informed BBC that it was a surprise and disappointing.

For the record, Denmark is only at 1.35% of GDP for NATO spending. They are a wealthy country and should be at 2%. We protect Europe and yet, only 8 of the 28 NATO countries are at the 2% mark. The United States is at a much, much higher level than that….

US ambassador to Denmark also tweeted about the cancellation of Trump visit. Earlier reports confirmed that Mr. Trump was interested in buying Greenland when he asked on Sunday about trading a US territory for the island. Mr. Trump said a lot of things could be done, actually when it comes to the real estate deal. The US president also posted a picture on his social media page in which a high golden building can be seen among the houses of a small village on an island.
