Bodies of Two Missing French Fishermen Recovered After Channel Trawler Sinks

The bodies of two French fishermen who had been missing since their trawler sank in the English Channel have been recovered, French prosecutors said on Saturday.

The fishermen were among five crew members aboard the Maranello, which sank after sending a distress call on August 29. The vessel reported problems with its fishing equipment while operating off the coast of Plymouth, an English port in southwest Britain.

A nearby fishing vessel responded to the emergency and managed to rescue three members of the five-person crew before the Maranello went under, according to authorities.

The remaining two fishermen could not be located during the initial rescue operation. Search teams continued efforts to find them after the trawler disappeared beneath the water.

The wreck was located in the middle of the week, allowing authorities to focus subsequent operations on determining whether the missing fishermen were still inside the vessel.

Alex Dehays, deputy public prosecutor in Saint-Brieuc, said improved weather conditions allowed divers to resume the search on Saturday.

“The weather conditions made it possible to resume the search today,” Dehays said, adding that divers located and recovered the bodies of the two missing crew members.

The recovery brought an end to several days of uncertainty for the families of the fishermen and those involved in the rescue operation.

The sinking occurred in waters around the English Channel, one of Europe’s busiest maritime areas and a major fishing ground for vessels from France and Britain. Fishing operations in the region can be affected by difficult weather and challenging sea conditions, adding risks to crews working offshore.

The three surviving crew members were rescued shortly after the distress call was issued. Authorities have not provided further details about their condition.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the sinking, including the reported problems with the vessel’s fishing gear and the conditions at sea when the accident occurred.

The discovery of the wreck earlier in the week was an important step in the search, but adverse weather prevented divers from immediately carrying out a full operation around the vessel.

Once conditions improved, specialist divers were able to enter the water and search the wreck, leading to the recovery of the two fishermen.

French authorities are continuing to gather information about the incident. The investigation is expected to examine why the trawler sank and whether equipment failure, sea conditions or other factors contributed to the accident.
