Monday, August 5, 2024, Bangladesh — In a dramatic turn of events, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country amid weeks of deadly protests. The situation escalated as protesters stormed her official residence, leading to widespread chaos and violence.

The Crisis Unfolds

The protests initially began with students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs. However, clashes between police and pro-government activists quickly escalated, resulting in over 200 deaths last month. These tragic events triggered further demonstrations, with citizens demanding accountability from the government.

A Nation in Turmoil

On Sunday, at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, lost their lives during clashes in the capital. Hundreds more were injured. The violence continued on Monday, with reports of six additional fatalities in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas.

Prime Minister’s Escape

Facing mounting pressure, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made a daring escape. She and her sister boarded a military helicopter bound for India, seeking “safe shelter” away from her official residence. The army confirmed her departure, and the country’s leading national paper reported the news.

Interim Government Announced

In a televised speech, the country’s military chief, General Waker-Us-Zaman, announced the formation of an interim government. He pledged to ensure justice for all victims and stabilize the nation during this tumultuous period.

As Bangladesh grapples with the aftermath of these deadly protests, the world watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution and stability in the region.
