Foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have called on the United States and Iran to continue negotiations aimed at ending their conflict, while stressing the importance of maintaining stability in global transport routes.
The appeal came during a virtual meeting held on Monday, where ministers discussed the escalating situation in the Middle East and its wider impact on international security and trade. In a joint message, they urged both sides to pursue dialogue toward a lasting resolution and to fully implement the existing ceasefire.
The ministers emphasised that sustaining peace efforts remains critical at a time of heightened tensions. They also highlighted the need to prevent further disruption to global commerce, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
The waterway serves as a vital channel for energy shipments, with a significant share of global oil and gas supplies passing through it each day. Any interruption to traffic in the strait can quickly ripple across international markets, affecting fuel prices and economic stability far beyond the region.
ASEAN members expressed concern about recent developments that have threatened the free movement of vessels and aircraft in and around the area. They called for the immediate restoration of safe, unimpeded and continuous transit passage, warning that prolonged restrictions could have serious consequences for global supply chains.
The bloc’s statement reflects growing unease among Asian economies, many of which depend heavily on Middle Eastern energy imports. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could place additional strain on countries already dealing with inflationary pressures and uncertain economic conditions.
While ASEAN does not play a direct role in the conflict, its collective voice carries weight in international diplomacy, particularly on issues affecting trade and regional security. The group has consistently advocated for peaceful solutions to disputes and adherence to international law.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the standoff between Washington and Tehran have so far yielded limited results, despite recent high-level talks. The failure to reach a comprehensive agreement has left the situation fragile, with concerns that tensions could escalate further if negotiations stall.
ASEAN ministers reiterated their readiness to support international efforts aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging constructive engagement between the parties involved, underscoring the importance of cooperation in maintaining global stability.
