One of the most provocative sentiments we observed as women are “victim-blaming” or asking us to “stay silent” after any abuse or mistreatment. This practice has been observed not just in developing countries even in rich countries as well. I want to highlight the mindset behind why a woman has always been asked to stay silent or victimized after every abuse is it financial to physical.
I want to first explain few terms which are commonly used without knowing their literal sense and meanings, “victim-blaming” in this scenario victim of any crime or wrongful act is held partial or fully responsible of the act, next is “secondary victimization” where the victim’s credibility deliberately tends to undermine in order to make him or her look at fault by blaming them, disbelieving their stories, inappropriate handling after they go through trauma, post-event mistreatments, or maybe calling them with disgusting and nasty names such as “damaged”, associate them with low-level labels that “they wear provocative clothes”, slut-shaming and also public humiliation.
The problem is most women are asked to stay silent or bear with this mistreatment because “it happens everywhere” or “we can’t change people” or “men are men” kind of disgusting justifications are given to convince them that she is the one who feels it. Actually, she is feeling right, this is something that has to be felt because it has nothing to do with women, it has everything to do with toxic misogyny which is embedded even in most developed societies. When this dilemma of victim-blaming happens naturally pro-criminal try to make victim’s standing weak and tell them since you are this or that or say this or that that’s why these things happen to you… No absolutely not it’s not because of the victim or woman it’s because of the mindset.
Through this article, I’m trying to bring awareness that males of the society if give very irresponsible or sexiest remarks to females and women are asked to stay silent they are not proving themselves as men, it’s toxic masculinity. Secondly, if a woman after going through any abuse from physical to financial and they are discouraged from standing up or speaking up for their selves here you are not just encouraging males of the society to stop women rather shaming them for acting brave to fight for their rights.
We as a progressive nation need to evaluate our laws especially for women and seriously change them and make them more pro-women rather than pro men, only then you can utilize your half of the real workforce which is women.
