Yemen Targets US F-16 Fighter Jet and Drone in Red Sea Escalation

Yemen Targets US F-16 Fighter Jet and Drone in Red Sea Escalation

Yemen’s Ansarallah-aligned armed forces, commonly referred to as the Houthis, fired a surface-to-air missile at a US F-16 fighter jet flying over the Red Sea near Yemen’s coast, according to senior Pentagon officials cited by Fox News. The missile reportedly missed its target.

On the same day, Yemeni forces also launched a missile at an advanced US MQ-9 Reaper drone. US defense officials have labeled the attacks a “significant escalation” and are currently debating potential responses. Discussions include whether to pursue a counterterrorism approach or a broader military campaign against Yemen’s armed forces.

According to Fox News, this marks the first time the Houthis have fired a surface-to-air missile at a US F-16. However, in December, Yemen’s military claimed to have downed a US F-18 fighter jet and forced other aircraft to retreat during a joint American-British attack.

While Yemeni forces have not commented on the latest incident, they have launched numerous operations against US and Israeli assets since October 7, 2023. These actions are in response to Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza. In January, Yemen’s armed forces targeted the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, reportedly forcing it to retreat northward.

US officials maintain that most Yemeni missiles have missed their intended targets. Nevertheless, Yemen’s forces have successfully shot down several MQ-9 Reaper drones in previous operations. Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesperson for Yemen’s military, has consistently stated that Sanaa will continue to defend the nation’s sovereignty against foreign aggression.

The latest attacks highlight rising tensions in the Red Sea region, where commercial shipping and military operations have faced increasing threats. As Washington weighs its next steps, international observers are closely monitoring whether the incident will lead to further escalation in the conflict.
