Visa Offers $100 Million to Secure Apple Card Partnership

Visa Offers $100 Million to Secure Apple Card Partnership

Visa has reportedly offered Apple a substantial $100 million payment in an attempt to take over the tech giant’s credit card partnership from Mastercard, according to a Wall Street Journal report published on Tuesday, April 1.

Sources familiar with the matter told the Journal that Visa’s offer represents a bold move to secure the Apple Card, a lucrative financial product launched in 2019. The upfront payment, a strategy typically reserved for the largest card programs, underscores the high stakes in the battle for Apple’s credit card business.

Neither Visa nor Apple has commented publicly on the reported negotiations. When approached for a statement, Visa declined to respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The competition to replace Mastercard as Apple Card’s payment processor has also drawn interest from American Express (Amex). According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, Amex is not only seeking to become the card’s payment network but also its issuer, positioning itself as a comprehensive financial partner for Apple.

Apple first launched its credit card in partnership with Goldman Sachs and Mastercard in 2019, offering a seamless integration with the iPhone’s Wallet app and exclusive benefits for Apple users. However, the partnership between Apple and Goldman Sachs has since come to an end, with reports in November 2023 confirming the dissolution of their alliance. The move left Apple seeking a new financial partner to manage and process transactions for the Apple Card.

Industry analysts suggest that securing the Apple Card partnership could be a major win for either Visa or Amex. The credit card has gained significant traction among Apple users due to its cashback rewards, lack of fees, and deep integration with Apple Pay. As a result, payment networks are eager to capitalize on the Apple Card’s customer base and transaction volume.

If Visa succeeds in replacing Mastercard, it would mark a major shift in the competitive landscape of the credit card industry. However, Amex’s interest in both processing and issuing the card presents a potential challenge to Visa’s bid.

While details of the bidding process remain undisclosed, financial experts believe Apple’s decision will hinge on factors such as network capabilities, customer incentives, and potential long-term benefits for its expanding financial ecosystem.

As the competition intensifies, Apple’s next move in selecting a new partner for the Apple Card remains highly anticipated. Industry watchers will be closely monitoring any official announcements regarding the future of one of the tech world’s most innovative credit cards.
