Typhoon Bebinca, the 13th typhoon to form this year, made a powerful landfall in Shanghai on Monday morning, marking one of the most severe weather events in recent history for the city. According to the Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory, the storm hit the Lingang area of Pudong district with maximum wind speeds near its center reaching 42 meters per second.
China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that Bebinca is the strongest typhoon to land in Shanghai in 75 years. The storm’s intensity and the threat of widespread damage prompted authorities to raise emergency response levels and issue severe weather warnings across multiple regions.
Ahead of the typhoon’s landfall, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in China activated a Level IV emergency response for the eastern province of Anhui on Sunday, while Shanghai and neighboring Zhejiang Province saw their response levels raised to Level III. China’s emergency response system is tiered into four levels, with Level I being the most severe. The country also utilizes a color-coded weather warning system: red signifies the highest risk, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
Typhoon Bebinca’s impact is expected to bring heavy rains, strong winds, and potential flooding in affected areas. Authorities have been preparing for possible disruptions to transportation, power, and communications, urging residents to stay indoors and follow official instructions. Coastal areas and low-lying regions are particularly vulnerable to the storm surge and rising water levels.
Local emergency services have been on high alert, coordinating efforts to mitigate the typhoon’s impact and ensure the safety of residents. The public is being kept informed via real-time weather updates, with evacuation plans and temporary shelters in place if conditions worsen.
Shanghai, a major economic hub, faces significant challenges as the city copes with the powerful typhoon. Business operations, including at the city’s ports and airports, are anticipated to experience delays or suspensions, further highlighting the potential economic ripple effects of the storm.
As Typhoon Bebinca continues its course inland, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Residents in affected regions are urged to remain cautious and prepared as the storm progresses.
