Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov in Ankara on Friday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced in a statement on social media platform X.

While specific details of the discussions were not immediately disclosed, the meeting comes as part of a broader diplomatic engagement between Turkey and Ukraine, coinciding with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Turkey.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Earlier in the day, Umerov also held talks with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, signaling a deepening of defense cooperation between the two nations amid ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe.

The visit underscores Turkey’s strategic role as a key player in regional diplomacy, balancing its relationships with both Ukraine and Russia while seeking to facilitate dialogue and maintain stability in the region.

A Diplomatic Mission Amid Conflict

President Zelenskyy’s visit to Turkey is expected to cover a range of bilateral and security issues, particularly regarding defense collaboration, trade, and regional stability.

Turkey has been actively involved in mediating the Black Sea grain deal, which allowed for the safe export of Ukrainian grain despite the ongoing war. The deal, initially brokered with the help of the United Nations and Turkey, collapsed last year following Russia’s withdrawal.

As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues, Turkey remains a critical partner in ensuring regional security and supporting diplomatic efforts.

Further details on the discussions between Fidan and Umerov are expected in the coming days.
