Major corporations, including Amazon and Google, have signed a commitment to support the global effort to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050, marking a significant endorsement of nuclear power as a clean energy source. The pledge was made on the sidelines of the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston on Wednesday.

Broad Industry Support for Nuclear Expansion

Joining the tech giants in the pledge were Occidental, a leading shale oil company, and Japanese heavy machinery manufacturer IHI Corp. The initiative, facilitated by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), is expected to gain further backing from industries such as maritime, aviation, and oil and gas in the coming months.

The commitment aligns with a 2023 pledge by over 30 nations to triple nuclear energy capacity by mid-century. Support from major private-sector players signals growing confidence in nuclear power’s role in the global energy transition.

Nuclear Power’s Growing Role in Clean Energy

Nuclear energy currently accounts for 9% of the world’s electricity, with 439 reactors in operation, according to the WNA. However, as of early 2025, only 411 reactors are actively producing power, with a combined capacity of 371 gigawatts.

Governments and industries are looking to scale up nuclear power to meet growing electricity demand while reducing carbon emissions. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear energy provides stable, low-emission power and is seen as a key component in achieving net-zero climate goals.

Momentum for Nuclear Energy Growth

The renewed push for nuclear energy comes as countries and corporations seek reliable alternatives to fossil fuels amid rising concerns over energy security and climate change. Recent advancements in small modular reactors (SMRs) and next-generation nuclear technology have further fueled optimism about nuclear power’s expansion.

By securing support from influential companies across multiple industries, the nuclear industry aims to accelerate investment and innovation in reactor construction, fuel supply, and infrastructure development.

As the global energy landscape evolves, the backing of nuclear power by technology firms, industrial giants, and energy producers highlights its potential as a cornerstone of the future clean energy mix.
