DOHA – Spain and Argentina maintained their dominant performances at the FIP World Padel Championships, held at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex, continuing their winning streaks in both the men’s and women’s divisions. In contrast, host nation Qatar suffered its second consecutive loss, struggling to find footing against the French team.
Spain’s men’s team, the reigning champions, asserted their superiority in Group B with a decisive sweep over the UAE. Top-ranked pair Juan Lebron and Arturo Coello set the tone with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over S. Icardo and I. Jofre. The world’s third-ranked player, Alejandro Galan, partnered with Miguel Yanguas to fend off a challenge from F. Jurado and A. Ayats, securing a 6-4, 7-5 win. Francisco Navarro and Jorge Sanz completed the sweep with a swift 6-0, 6-0 victory over F. and M. al-Janahi in just 33 minutes.
Meanwhile, in Group A, Argentina, the most decorated nation in the history of the Padel World Championships, also delivered an impressive performance against the USA. Agustin Tapia and Federico Chingotto opened with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win against M. Segura and S. Castaneda Rubio. Following up, C.D. Gutierrez and L. Augsburger maintained Argentina’s momentum, defeating V. Di Francesco and N. Agritelley with a score of 6-3, 6-3. V.G. Libaak and A. Chozas completed Argentina’s sweep, overcoming R. Ruiz Alvarez and W. Agritelley 6-1, 6-3.
In Group C, Qatar faced a tough match against France. The French team proved too strong, with Jeremy Bergeron and Thomas Vanbauce dispatching Abdulla Alhijji and Mohammed Abdulla in 51 minutes with a 6-0, 6-1 scoreline. Maxime Joris and Bastien Blanque continued France’s dominance, securing a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mohamed al-Khanji and Mohamed Saadon al-Kuwari, while Thomas Leygue and Theo Fonteny ended the match with a swift 6-0, 6-1 win over Ahmed Hassan and Jabor al-Mutawa in just 36 minutes.
Elsewhere, Brazil defeated the Netherlands 3-0, while Chile narrowly triumphed over Uruguay 2-1.
In the women’s division, Spain and Argentina also upheld their unbeaten streaks, climbing to the top of their respective groups. Italy and France remain undefeated as well, highlighting strong competition among Europe and Latin American teams.
Yesterday morning’s other women’s matches saw France overpower the Netherlands 3-0, Belgium sweep Denmark 3-0, and Sweden defeat Uruguay 3-0. Italy also secured a clean 3-0 victory against Japan, while Portugal swept the USA. Brazil delivered an impressive comeback, winning 2-1 against Germany.
