A sobering exhibit at Sharjah’s Zahia City Centre presents a stark reminder of the dangers of drug addiction. At the heart of the display, a hyper-realistic scene depicts a teenager passed out on a grimy floor, surrounded by drug paraphernalia, including syringes, a hashish pipe, crumpled wrappers, and remnants of food containers.
This unsettling scene is part of the Sharjah Police exhibition, “My Family is My Biggest Wealth 2024,” which runs from November 14 to November 21. The exhibition seeks to spark dialogue about drug abuse through interactive content and educational displays.
Raising Awareness About Addiction
The event features various narcotics, including crystal meth, marijuana, and synthetic cannabis, offering visitors an in-depth view of substances threatening the community. A Sharjah Police spokesperson told Khaleej Times that the exhibit aims to educate parents on recognizing signs of addiction and understanding the drugs their children may encounter.
“We want to dismantle the stigma surrounding addiction,” the spokesperson emphasized. “The police are allies in the fight against drug abuse, and we encourage individuals and families to seek help without fear.”
Legal Protections Highlighted
A key focus of the exhibit is the UAE’s legal framework for addressing drug abuse, particularly Articles 89 and 64 of the country’s drug laws.
Under Article 89, individuals who voluntarily surrender to authorities or whose family members report their addiction are exempt from criminal charges. “This initiative is crucial in encouraging families to come forward and seek help without legal repercussions,” the spokesperson explained.
Article 64 addresses accountability in drug-related transactions, shedding light on how young people can unknowingly become involved in drug offenses due to peer pressure or lack of awareness. The spokesperson underscored the importance of education in preventing such scenarios.
Positive Engagement Through Sports
In addition to the eye-opening displays, Sharjah Police organized activities to engage youth in constructive ways. A fitness challenge tested participants’ physical endurance, drawing significant interest from attendees.
“I was amazed to see a 16-year-old complete an hour of intense activity,” the spokesperson shared, emphasizing the importance of providing youth with healthy outlets to deter them from falling into harmful behaviors.
Community Support
The exhibition’s strong turnout reflects the community’s commitment to combating drug abuse. By combining stark visual displays with educational and recreational initiatives, the event seeks to foster awareness, reduce stigma, and promote proactive measures to safeguard the youth.
Sharjah Police’s efforts underscore the importance of collective action in addressing drug addiction and empowering families to protect their loved ones.
