Saudi Arabia Reaffirms Support for Sudan at UN Human Rights Council

Saudi Arabia Reaffirms Support for Sudan at UN Human Rights Council

Saudi Arabia has reiterated its unwavering support for Sudan and its people in their efforts to overcome the ongoing crisis and achieve a lasting political resolution. Speaking at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen Bin Khothaila, emphasized the kingdom’s commitment to Sudan’s stability and security.

Bin Khothaila highlighted Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic efforts to mediate the conflict, particularly its role in hosting peace talks in Jeddah in collaboration with the United States. The negotiations aimed to protect civilians, establish a ceasefire, and facilitate a political settlement that preserves Sudan’s institutions and prevents further deterioration of the country’s governance.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the ambassador stressed that a solution must begin with halting the ongoing violence and bolstering humanitarian efforts to support the Sudanese population. He underscored that ensuring stability and security is crucial for Sudan’s future and the aspirations of its people.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with thousands killed and millions displaced. International efforts to mediate peace have faced challenges, but Saudi Arabia has remained a key player in diplomatic initiatives.

With Saudi Arabia reaffirming its dedication to Sudan’s peace process, attention now turns to the effectiveness of continued negotiations and the international community’s response in supporting a resolution to the crisis.
