Amman, Jordan – Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Palestinian refugees on Tuesday, as Saudi Ambassador to Jordan, Naif Al-Sudairi, presented a financial contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The donation was handed to UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, during a formal ceremony aimed at bolstering the agency’s programs and operations across the region.

The contribution underscores the Kingdom’s long-standing dedication to the Palestinian cause and its support for UNRWA’s mission to provide critical services to Palestinian refugees. “Saudi Arabia remains steadfast in its commitment to the Palestinian people, and we are honored to continue supporting UNRWA’s essential work,” Al-Sudairi said during the presentation.

UNRWA’s Critical Role

UNRWA plays a vital role in the lives of millions of Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, providing education, healthcare, and other crucial services. Commissioner-General Lazzarini expressed gratitude for the Saudi donation, emphasizing its importance in sustaining the agency’s operations, particularly in light of the increasing challenges faced by Palestinian refugees.

“This generous contribution from Saudi Arabia will enable us to continue delivering essential services, including education and healthcare, to some of the most vulnerable people in the region,” Lazzarini said. He highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, where ongoing conflict has left over 650,000 children out of school, many of whom are experiencing significant psychological trauma due to the conflict and instability.

Concerns Over Gaza and Israeli Legislation

Lazzarini also voiced concern over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, which have worsened following recent Israeli military actions. He pointed out that, in addition to the immediate needs of the population, UNRWA faces potential challenges from proposed Israeli legislation targeting the agency’s operations, which could further complicate its ability to deliver aid.

Saudi Humanitarian Aid Efforts

In a related humanitarian initiative, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), in collaboration with UNRWA, has been distributing shelter kits to families in Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah in Gaza. This assistance is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to provide relief to those in need, not just in Palestine, but globally. KSrelief has been at the forefront of the Kingdom’s humanitarian efforts, supporting vulnerable populations in regions affected by conflict and disaster.

The Saudi contribution comes at a critical time for UNRWA, which continues to struggle with funding shortfalls amid growing demands for its services. The support from Saudi Arabia is expected to provide a lifeline to many Palestinian refugees, ensuring that vital programs, particularly in education and healthcare, can continue to operate in the face of mounting challenges.
