The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that two Tu-95MS strategic bombers of the Aerospace Forces successfully completed a 10-hour training flight over the neutral waters of the Chukchi Sea. The bombers were accompanied by Su-35 and Su-30SM fighter jets as part of Russia’s ongoing “Ocean-2024” military exercises, which commenced on September 10.

During the mission, the bombers conducted simulated strikes using air-launched cruise missiles, targeting hypothetical enemy positions. According to the Defense Ministry, the flight followed international airspace regulations and involved no territorial violations.

The Tu-95MS bombers are a key component of Russia’s long-range aviation forces and play a crucial role in the country’s nuclear triad, which consists of strategic bombers, submarines, and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The nuclear triad is seen as a fundamental part of Russia’s defense strategy, ensuring deterrence against potential threats.

The “Ocean-2024” drills are one of Russia’s largest military exercises this year, involving an impressive array of military assets. More than 400 warships, submarines, and support vessels are participating, alongside over 120 aircraft and helicopters. Additionally, around 7,000 pieces of military equipment and more than 90,000 personnel are involved in the exercises, highlighting the scope and scale of Russia’s military preparedness.

These extensive military drills demonstrate Russia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military capabilities and maintain a high level of readiness. The participation of strategic bombers like the Tu-95MS underscores the importance Moscow places on showcasing its ability to project power over long distances and across various domains, including air, sea, and nuclear forces.

The Ocean-2024 exercises come at a time of heightened global tensions, with Russia continuing to emphasize its strategic military presence in various regions. The use of bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons, along with the coordination of air, sea, and land forces, signals Russia’s commitment to modernizing its defense systems and reinforcing its position on the global stage.

The drills are expected to continue in the coming weeks, further demonstrating Russia’s comprehensive military capabilities in an era of evolving geopolitical challenges.
