Pakistan Clinch ODI Series Against South Africa with Dominant Win at Newlands

Shaheen Shah Afridi delivered an outstanding performance with the ball as Pakistan secured an ODI series victory over South Africa with an emphatic 81-run win at Newlands, Cape Town, on Thursday. The victory gave Pakistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with one game remaining in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Opting to field first on a ground where chasing under lights is notoriously challenging, South Africa’s decision backfired as Pakistan posted an imposing total of 329 runs before being bowled out.

Captain Mohammad Rizwan played a crucial anchor role with a steady 80 runs off 82 balls. However, it was Kamran Ghulam who provided the fireworks, smashing a blistering 63 from just 32 balls to propel the visitors to a competitive score. Babar Azam also contributed significantly with a composed 73 off 95 balls.

South Africa’s bowling effort was marred by inconsistency and fielding lapses. Debutant fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, just 18 years old, was the standout performer, claiming 4-72 in his 10 overs. Despite his efforts, the home side struggled to contain Pakistan’s aggressive batting lineup.

In response, South Africa’s chase faltered early, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Several batters, including David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen, managed to get starts but failed to convert them into substantial contributions. Heinrich Klaasen was the lone bright spot for the hosts, scoring a valiant 97 off 74 balls. However, he ran out of partners as the South African innings folded for 248 in 43.1 overs.

Shaheen Afridi was the star of Pakistan’s bowling attack, delivering a masterclass in seam bowling with figures of 4-47. He dismantled South Africa’s middle order, including the crucial wicket of David Miller for 29, effectively sealing the game for Pakistan.

Pakistan’s comprehensive performance saw them outclass South Africa in all departments, from batting to fielding and bowling. The home side’s fielding woes, marked by dropped catches and misfields, only added to their woes.

The third and final ODI in Johannesburg offers little more than a chance for South Africa to salvage some pride, while Pakistan will look to complete a clean sweep and build momentum ahead of future engagements.
