Luka Doncic shared a heartfelt farewell to the city of Dallas on Sunday, the same day his blockbuster trade to the Los Angeles Lakers was finalized. The former Mavericks star expressed deep gratitude to the fans and community, reflecting on his time with the team and his aspirations of bringing a championship to the city.
“I wanted so badly to bring you a championship,” Doncic wrote in an open letter. “For a young kid from Slovenia coming to the U.S. for the first time, you made North Texas feel like home.”
The trade, which sent Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for fellow All-NBA player Anthony Davis, marks a major shakeup in the NBA landscape. While the move signals a new chapter for the 25-year-old superstar, it also closes a meaningful and emotional journey in Dallas, where he became a fan favorite.
Doncic’s impact extended beyond the basketball court. He was deeply involved in charitable work throughout North Texas, donating to various organizations and supporting frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing them with Jordan Brand sneakers. His contributions to the Dallas community were recognized in 2021 when Dallas County Commissioners declared July 6 as “Luka Doncic Day” in honor of his efforts both on and off the court.
The Slovenian star quickly became one of the most beloved figures in Mavericks history. In just 422 games with the franchise, Doncic climbed the team’s all-time leaderboards, ranking sixth in scoring, second in three-pointers made (behind Dirk Nowitzki), third in rebounds, and fifth in assists. His No. 77 Mavericks jersey was a best-seller, ranking eighth in sales on NBAStore.com through the first half of the season.
Despite the trade, Doncic remains focused on his ultimate goal—winning championships. In a separate social media post, he expressed his excitement about joining the Lakers.
“Grateful for this amazing opportunity,” he wrote, linking to the Lakers’ official welcome post. “Basketball means everything to me, and no matter where I play, I’ll do so with the same joy, passion, and goal—to win championships.”
As Lakers fans eagerly await his debut in purple and gold, Doncic’s legacy in Dallas is cemented. His farewell message ended with appreciation for the fans and organizations that embraced him throughout his career in Texas.
“As I start the next part of my basketball journey, I am leaving a city that will always feel like a home away from home. Dallas is a special place, and Mavs fans are special fans.”
While his journey with the Mavericks has come to an end, Doncic’s impact on the franchise and community will not be forgotten.
